Cyprus · Month 01 of 12
Cyprus in
January.
The quietest month — empty bays, mild days, almonds in flower by month-end.
The weather, honestly
January is Cyprus at its softest and emptiest. Days hover around 16°C on the coast — sunny enough for long walks, too cool for the sea unless you swim year-round (some locals do, every morning, in Larnaca). Nights drop to 8°C; mountain villages can see snow above 1,200m.
What to actually do
Wrong month for a beach holiday, right month for the Cyprus most tourists never see. Walking the Akamas without another soul, hiking the Troodos when the peaks have snow on them, eating long Sunday lunches in villages that are almost empty. Almond blossoms appear around the third week — a quiet, easily-missed Cypriot spectacle.
Events & festivals
- Epiphany (6 Jan) — Larnaca, Paphos, Ayia Napa. Bishops bless the harbour; young men dive for a wooden cross. Best at Larnaca's Finikoudes.
- Almond Blossom Festival — Limassol foothills (Limnatis, Korfi). Last weekend of January. Quietly beautiful.
Where to go
- Troodos. Snow at altitude, fireplaces in stone tavernas, almond trees in flower below.
- Akamas Peninsula. Walking weather without another car on the road.
- Nicosia. The capital is at its most liveable in winter.
What to pack
- Layers — t-shirt + sweater + a real jacket
- Walking shoes
- A waterproof for the 12 rain days
- Swim trunks if you swim cold
Practical notes
Some beachfront tavernas and tour operators close for January. Cities stay fully open. Hotel prices are at their year-low.
