Paphos in April is a strong choice for a warm, outdoor city break — provided you treat the sea as a bonus, not the whole holiday. The days are better suited to open-air archaeology, a harbour walk and a long lunch than they were in winter, and from 16 April the published summer timetable gives the main archaeological sites more daylight. But a cool evening, a brisk coast and a sea that still feels cold to plenty of visitors are all normal spring realities.
That is the useful version of April: more light, a greener countryside and a town that works without a beach-club schedule. The official Cyprus climate guidance describes April and May as pleasantly warm days with cooler nights, and as a good time for nature while the countryside is green and flowers are in bloom. It is broad island guidance, not a promise for a particular Paphos week. Check the forecast shortly before travelling, especially if a boat day, beach swim or Troodos drive is central to the trip.
For the island-wide question, begin with Cyprus in April. This page answers the narrower Paphos decision: what April is good for, why the archaeology timetable matters, and how to plan a four-day break that still works when the coast is breezy. For an earlier version of the same weather-led approach, see Paphos in March; if your dates move later, compare the island-wide Cyprus in May guide.
Paphos in April at a glance
| If this matters most | Is April a good fit? | The practical version |
|---|---|---|
| Archaeology, harbour walks and meals outdoors | Yes | Use the longer daylight and save open sites for the best morning |
| A short UK spring escape | Yes | Choose a town base and keep one day weather-led |
| Countryside, villages and a walk | Usually | Spring greenery is a real advantage; check route and weather first |
| A sea swim | Maybe | Decide by conditions and personal comfort, not an average |
| Daily pool-and-beach holiday | Not reliably | Confirm a heated pool and do not assume summer water temperatures |
| Every seasonal operator running | Variable | Check the exact boat, watersport, restaurant or hotel directly |
What April weather means in Paphos
April is the handover from a winter-style culture break to a proper spring outdoors trip. On a settled day, the harbour and the Archaeological Park reward being outside for hours. When cloud or wind arrives, the same coast can feel noticeably cooler, and the evening is not an excuse to leave a layer at home.
Use historical information as context, not as a forecast. The Cyprus Department of Meteorology’s Paphos Airport normal-temperature dataset provides monthly maximum and minimum normals for the airport, using a 1981–2010 reference period. It cannot predict your hotel, harbour wind or a specific day years later. It does, however, reinforce why a flexible plan is more useful than buying clothes around a single number.
Give every day two possible versions:
- clear and settled: an archaeological site, coastal walk, harbour time or a longer drive;
- breezy or changeable: Ktima, a confirmed museum or gallery, a slow lunch and time around the harbour between showers.
That small amount of slack makes April enjoyable rather than over-scheduled. It also protects the trip from the classic mistake of treating a Paphos forecast as a forecast for a mountain road. If you are considering the hills, read the Paphos to Troodos guide, then make the final call with current conditions and road information.
Swimming: a personal choice, not the contract
The water does not switch to summer temperatures because the calendar says April. A confident cold-water swimmer may enjoy a calm sunny morning; someone else may prefer the promenade on exactly the same day. Wind, swell, beach flags, access and your own comfort decide it at the shore.
For that reason, do not book an April Paphos trip on the assumption that everyone will swim every day. Read our Paphos beaches guide to choose a bay or stretch of coast, and use Cyprus sea temperature by month for the wider seasonal trade-off. Then make the final decision from live conditions. Never infer safety from a calm-looking photograph, and do not assume summer lifeguard cover, watersports or facilities are running.
If a pool would make or break the holiday, ask the hotel whether it is heated and operating on your dates. A listing that says “pool” is not proof of either. This is a quick question worth asking before you choose a rate.
Make the most of the longer archaeology timetable
The mid-April timetable change is a useful reason to pick Paphos rather than a quieter resort strip. The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism currently lists the Archaeological Park, Tombs of the Kings and Paphos Castle as open daily from 08:30 to 19:30 between 16 April and 15 September. It also says opening times and fees can change without notice, so treat that as a planning guide and check again before a non-negotiable visit.
Give the Archaeological Park its own morning
The Park is open, walking-heavy and far better with time than with a rushed tick-box route. The main mosaic houses, the Odeon, Agora and Saranta Kolones reward a cool start, then the harbour is an easy continuation rather than a separate expedition. Our Paphos Archaeological Park guide has the practical order and terrain.
Do not force the Tombs of the Kings into the same exhausted afternoon. It is a different, exposed site roughly two kilometres north of the harbour. A second morning gives it the time and light it deserves, and keeps the day enjoyable if the afternoon turns windy.
Keep the upper town as the weather-proof half-day
Paphos Old Town, in Ktima above the harbour, is the useful fallback when the coast is less appealing. The point is not to claim that every café, museum and shop runs summer hours. It is to pick one or two places that matter, confirm their own timetable, then combine them with a relaxed lunch.
That gives the trip a real town day, rather than treating a showery afternoon as lost time. For an evening meal, the Paphos restaurants guide is a sensible shortlist-builder; verify service days directly with the restaurant before travelling.
A flexible four-day April plan
| Day | Plan | Why it works in April |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Harbour walk, confirmed dinner, early night | A late flight or breeze does not spoil a paid activity |
| One | Archaeological Park in the morning; harbour afterwards | Open-air history is at its best before the day warms up |
| Two | Ktima, one checked cultural stop and a long lunch | It stays worthwhile if the coast is windy or cloudy |
| Three | Use the best forecast for a beach hour, coastal walk, village or drive | Conditions choose the outdoor highlight instead of cancelling it |
With an extra day, repeat the place you enjoyed or move the outdoor plan by a day. April is a very poor month for an itinerary that tries to cross the island just because the weather app looked sunny a fortnight ago. One good coast day and one proper archaeology morning are more valuable than a long checklist.
What to pack for Paphos in April
Pack for warm daylight, a cooler evening and the possibility of wind or a short shower:
- light clothes and a mid-layer for after sunset;
- a light waterproof or rain-resistant outer layer;
- trainers or walking shoes with grip for uneven stone and open sites;
- sunglasses, sun protection and a refillable water bottle; and
- swimwear only if cool water or a confirmed heated pool would still be worthwhile.
If a Troodos day is on the list, take an extra layer and treat it as a separate environment. Coastal Paphos and the mountains are not interchangeable; a sunny harbour morning does not make high ground automatically warm or dry.
Is Paphos in April worth it?
Yes, if you want a spring city-and-coast trip with more daylight, outdoor history and enough warmth to enjoy a promenade without needing high-summer heat. It suits visitors who are happy to let the forecast allocate the long outing and who see the sea as an option rather than an obligation.
Choose a later month if reliably warm water, a daily pool routine and full summer operations are essential. Otherwise, book a base close to town life, confirm the few details that would genuinely disappoint you, and leave one day open. That is how April delivers Paphos at its most generous: green, bright and easier to explore than at the height of summer.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is Paphos warm in April?
April is usually warm enough for comfortable sightseeing, harbour walks and outdoor lunches, while evenings can still feel cool. It is spring, not guaranteed summer heat: bring a light layer and check the short-term forecast for your exact dates.
Can you swim in Paphos in April?
Some visitors will enjoy a calm April sea; many will find it cool. Treat swimming as a conditions-and-comfort decision rather than a booking guarantee. Wind, swell, beach flags and whether your hotel pool is heated matter more than a monthly average.
What is open in Paphos in April?
The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism lists the Archaeological Park and Tombs of the Kings as open daily, with the published summer schedule beginning on 16 April. Individual restaurants, boat trips, watersports and hotel facilities have their own operating dates, so confirm anything essential directly.
Is April a good time to visit Paphos?
Yes, for a spring city-and-coast break with archaeology, walks and greenery in the countryside. It is less suitable if the holiday only works with reliably warm sea swimming, an all-day pool routine or every summer attraction operating.
What should I pack for Paphos in April?
Pack light clothes for warm afternoons, one layer for the evening, a light waterproof, walking shoes with grip, sun protection and swimwear only if cool water or a confirmed heated pool would still suit you.
