Paphos in February is worth it for a quiet, green and culture-led break — provided you book it for walks, archaeology and long lunches, not a guaranteed beach week. The month can offer bright, comfortable outdoor hours, but the weather is changeable and the evening is a different proposition from midday. Build in a movable day and you get one of Paphos’s least crowded, most forgiving seasons.
The official Cyprus tourism guidance describes February as changeable, with the possibility of warm days and occasional rain; it also warns that evenings can be quite cold. That is the useful starting point, rather than a single temperature promising a particular week. Its wider climate guidance calls December to February Cyprus’s mild winter and says the Troodos can have snow at this time. Check the short-term forecast before allocating the coast, the old town or a mountain drive.
For the island-wide question, start with Cyprus in February. This is the narrower Paphos answer: what the city is good at in late winter, how to use the published archaeology timetable and how to make a four-day visit work when a sunny morning turns into a wet afternoon. If your dates are earlier, compare it with Paphos in January; for the whole December-to-February choice, use our Cyprus in winter guide.

What February weather means in Paphos
February is a planning month, not a weather promise. The best version is a bright morning at an open archaeological site, lunch in town and a harbour walk when the breeze drops. The less photogenic version is rain, a cooler evening and a coast that feels exposed. Neither makes the trip a write-off if your plan has an indoor-or-town alternative and you do not attach the whole holiday to one paid excursion.
Visit Cyprus says February can bring warm days and occasional rain, while temperatures point towards spring and almond trees are in bloom. That is island-wide advice, not a forecast for Paphos. Its climate page also notes that conditions change with elevation and that Troodos receives winter rain and snow. Treat a Paphos harbour forecast as a starting point only; it does not describe a higher road, a mountain village or an exposed western-coast walk.
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology’s Paphos Airport normal-temperature dataset is useful historic context, but it cannot predict your travel week. Use a current forecast to choose your outdoors day after arrival. Pack a small day bag so a waterproof and a warm layer can travel with you even if lunchtime feels sunny.
Swimming: make it a bonus, not the booking reason
February is too cool and variable to treat the sea as the contract. Visit Cyprus gives 15–17°C for water near the coast in February, within its 16–17°C range for the three coolest months. That can suit a confident cold-water swimmer; it is not a universal holiday swim, and it says nothing about wind, waves, flags or a child’s comfort.
Make the call on the beach. Look at the water, follow local advice and do not infer a safe swim from a calm-looking hotel photograph. Seasonal facilities and watersport operations may not run on summer patterns. Our Paphos beaches guide is useful for choosing the coast, but conditions on the day decide whether it is a walking beach or a swimming beach.
If a pool matters, ask the accommodation whether it is heated and operating on your dates before you book. “Pool” is not a winter-service guarantee. For the wider month-by-month water trade-off, see Cyprus sea temperature by month.
What you can rely on when the weather changes
Paphos works in February because its trip is not restricted to the shoreline. A real town, major archaeology and an upper-town half-day give you useful choices if the coast is breezy.
Put the Archaeological Park on the best morning
The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism lists the Archaeological Park as open daily from 08:30 to 17:00 between 16 September and 15 April, with a listed €4.50 entrance fee. It expressly says times and fees may change without notice, so check the official page again before travelling. The Park is open, large and walking-heavy: cool bright weather is often ideal, while a soaking rain is a good reason to move it by a day.
Give it two or three unhurried hours for the mosaics, Odeon, Agora and Saranta Kolones. The Paphos Archaeological Park guide helps you make it an anchor visit rather than a rushed harbour add-on. Keep the Tombs of the Kings for a separate morning: it is also outdoors and deserves daylight, not a tired late-afternoon dash.
Keep Ktima for a grey or windy half-day
Paphos Old Town gives the break a useful change of scene above the harbour. Market streets, cafés and a slow meal remain appealing when an exposed coast does not. This is not a promise that every venue has summer hours: it is a reason to select one or two places, then confirm their individual timetable. Our Paphos restaurants guide can help narrow the area before you check a restaurant’s current service days.
The point is not to fill a rain day with a forced checklist. It is to base yourself somewhere where a walk, lunch and one confirmed cultural stop still make a satisfying half-day.
Let the clearest day choose the longer outing
Save the coast, a village lunch or a longer drive for the best forecast. February can be attractive for countryside views and seasonal green, but do not turn that into an obligation to drive into the hills. If a Troodos day appeals, read our Troodos guide, then check conditions, road notices and the forecast immediately before leaving. A mountain detour should be easy to replace with town time.
A flexible four-day February plan
| Day | Keep it simple | Why it works in February |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Harbour walk, confirmed dinner, early night | A late flight or a shower does not spoil a paid experience |
| One | Archaeological Park in the morning; harbour afterwards | A cool bright morning is ideal for an open site |
| Two | Ktima, a checked museum or market stop, then a long lunch | It stays worthwhile if the coast is breezy or wet |
| Three | Use the best forecast for a coastal walk, village or longer drive | The weather chooses the outing rather than ruining it |
With a fifth day, do less rather than drive the whole island. February rewards room to re-run a good harbour walk, move a site by a day or linger over lunch. It does not reward a summer itinerary squeezed into shorter, more changeable days.
What to pack
Bring adaptable layers rather than a beach-only suitcase or a heavy UK-winter wardrobe:
- light tops plus a warm mid-layer for evening and wind;
- a compact waterproof or rain-resistant outer layer;
- trainers or walking shoes with grip for uneven stone and open sites;
- sunglasses, sun protection and a small day bag; and
- swimwear only if cool sea water or a confirmed heated pool would still make you happy.
If the Troodos is on the plan, add warmer clothing and make that decision separately from Paphos. Coastal conditions and mountain conditions are not interchangeable. The official advice for February says winter apparel; a flexible combination of layers, a waterproof and decent footwear normally matters more than one bulky coat.
The February verdict
Choose Paphos in February for a calm Mediterranean city break where a Roman mosaic, a harbour walk and a good lunch can be the point of the day. It is particularly good for travellers who are happy to switch a coastal walk and an archaeological morning when the forecast asks them to.
Choose another month if daily swimming, reliable heat and full resort operations are essential. Otherwise, book a town base, confirm the few details that would genuinely disappoint you, and let the weather allocate your outdoor day. February will feel like a quieter version of Paphos, not a failed attempt at August. If your dates shift into early spring, Paphos in March picks up the same flexible approach as the days lengthen.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is Paphos warm in February?
Paphos is mild and changeable in February, not reliably hot. Bright afternoons can be excellent for walking and archaeology, but rain is possible and evenings can feel cold. Pack layers and use the short-term forecast for your exact dates.
Can you swim in Paphos in February?
Only if cool-water swimming appeals to you. Visit Cyprus gives 15–17°C for water near the coast in February; wind, swell, flags and personal comfort decide whether a particular day works. Do not book on the assumption of daily sea swimming.
What is open in Paphos in February?
Paphos is a working town and its major archaeological sites publish a winter timetable, but individual restaurants, tours and hotel facilities set their own hours. Confirm every non-negotiable booking directly, especially a heated pool, boat trip or specific restaurant.
Is February a good time to visit Paphos?
Yes for a quiet, culture-led break built around walking, archaeology and food; no if guaranteed beach weather, watersports and resort nightlife are essential. A flexible itinerary is the difference between a good February trip and a disappointing summer plan transplanted into winter.
What should I pack for Paphos in February?
Take light daytime layers, a warm mid-layer, a compact waterproof, walking shoes with grip and sun protection. Add swimwear only if you would be happy with a cold sea or have confirmed a heated hotel pool.
