The best time to visit Cyprus, according to the official numbers

October is the best month to visit Cyprus for most people, and the reason is a number almost nobody quotes: the sea averages 25°C in October against 24°C in June. You get June’s water, May’s air temperature and a fortnight of settled light, all at once. The standard advice is to take either shoulder, spring or autumn, as though the two were interchangeable. The official figures say they are not, and they also say the autumn shoulder is no longer the quiet one.

Everything below comes from two government sources. The climate figures are the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s table compiled from 22 meteorological stations across 2011 to 2020. The crowd figures are the Statistical Service’s monthly tourist arrivals for 2025, which is the only honest way to answer “how busy is it”, and which no page currently ranking for this search appears to use.

The short answer, by the trip you are taking

• Best month overall: October. Warmest non-summer sea, 27°C days, four rainy days.
• Best for swimming: September, then October. The sea peaks at 28°C in August but 27°C in September comes without the 34°C afternoons.
• Quietest warm month: April. A third fewer visitors than October, though the sea is still cold.
• Best for walking, ruins and the Troodos: April and May. Eleven hours of sun in May and three rainy days.
• Cheapest and emptiest: January and February. Also the wettest.
• If you are tied to the school holidays: late August into the first week of September, which buys you the warmest water of the year as the crowds start to thin.
• Worth avoiding: June, oddly. September is warmer in the air, three degrees warmer in the sea, and only about 14 per cent busier.

These are islandwide averages, so the Troodos villages run several degrees cooler than the table in every month and hold snow in winter. The arrivals column counts every visitor, not only holidaymakers, which matters most in December, when the Statistical Service recorded 56.4 per cent travelling for holidays and 32 per cent visiting friends and relatives. Read the winter numbers as an upper bound on how busy the resorts feel.

Why October keeps winning

Line up the two shoulder months and the case builds itself. May and October share a mean daily maximum of 27°C. May has two more hours of daily sunshine and one fewer rainy day, which is a real advantage if you are walking.

Everything else favours October. The sea is 25°C against May’s 21°C, a gap you feel in the first ten seconds rather than one you have to be told about. Water lags air by roughly two months in Cyprus, as our sea temperature guide sets out, so the autumn keeps giving back heat the island absorbed in August while the spring is still working its way out of winter. That single lag is why October swims better than June, and why nothing in a spring brochure can fix it.

Four rainy days is not nothing, and October is the month when the first proper weather of the year usually arrives. It tends to come in short bursts rather than settled grey. Our October packing list and the month page for October cover what that means for what goes in the case.

The shoulder season is not the quiet season any more

This is the part of the standard advice that has aged worst. Autumn used to be recommended partly because it was empty. It is not empty now.

In 2025 Cyprus took 537,744 visitors in October against 479,160 in May. September’s 570,635 came within about three per cent of July’s 589,116. On the arrivals numbers, September and October are high season with better weather, not a quiet alternative to it.

If low crowds are genuinely what you are after, the month to take is April, at 418,730 arrivals. It is the quietest month between March and November by a clear margin, and it comes with 22°C days, nine hours of sun and only four rainy days. The trade is the sea, still at 18°C, which suits a walking and sightseeing trip far better than a beach one. April is the month for the Akamas and the hill trails, for the archaeological sites before the heat, and for the wildflowers that only the spring gets.

Arrivals roughly double between March and April, which is the clearest marker of when the season actually starts. If you want the island at its emptiest with something still open, the last week of March is the sweet spot.

What 34°C in July and August actually means

Both months average a mean daily maximum of 34°C islandwide with overnight lows of 22°C, and between them they record no rainy days at all. Individual afternoons on the central plain go considerably higher; the Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s own climate notes put average maximums for the two months as high as 38°C inland.

That is a real constraint rather than a marketing caveat. It means sightseeing happens before ten and after five, and the middle of the day belongs to the shade or the water. August’s 28°C sea is the warmest of the year, and warm enough that it stops cooling you down.

August is also the single busiest month, at 602,026 arrivals, more than five times January’s 112,100. Prices follow the same curve, which our guide to what Cyprus costs breaks down.

None of that makes July and August wrong if the school calendar decides your dates. It does mean choosing your base for shade and sea breeze rather than for the brochure photograph. The west coast runs two to three degrees cooler than the south east on summer afternoons, which is the strongest argument in our Larnaca or Paphos comparison, and worth more than any other single decision you make about a summer trip.

November to March: the half of the year nobody books

Arrivals fall off a cliff after October: 234,580 in November, 156,959 in December, 112,100 in January. That is the whole appeal.

November is the last month of the year you can reasonably call a beach month. The sea holds 22°C, warmer than May, and the air averages 22°C with five rainy days. December through February is a different holiday entirely. Days average 15°C to 17°C, the sunshine drops to five or six hours, and January is the wettest month of the year at twelve rainy days. What you get in exchange is an island to yourself, the lowest prices of the year, Troodos under snow and a short ski season near the 1,952 m summit, and towns that are being lived in rather than visited. March is the turn. Nineteen degrees, eight hours of sun, six rainy days, and the green that only lasts a few weeks before the island browns off for the summer.

The verdict

Take October if you want one month that does everything: the warmest sea outside high summer, comfortable days, and light that photographers turn up for. Take April if the crowds matter more than the swimming. Take September if the swimming matters more than the crowds.

Do not treat spring and autumn as the same recommendation. The brochures pair them because the air temperatures match. The sea does not match, the crowds do not match any more, and both of those will shape your week more than a degree of afternoon heat ever will.
