Car hire in Cyprus: how to choose the right rental for your trip

Car hire in Cyprus is worth it when it changes the holiday you can have — not simply because a search result shows a low daily rate. Hire a car for mountain villages, independent beaches, scattered family days or a multi-stop route. Skip it for a one-base resort break when the airport transfer, walks and a few planned trips already cover the week.

The useful decision comes before the booking screen: decide how many days you will genuinely drive, where you will park and which roads the itinerary needs. Then compare like-for-like quotes, including the excess and extras, rather than treating the cheapest headline figure as the final cost. Start with the itinerary, not the car category

List the accommodation, airport and day trips you would regret not reaching. Then ask what each journey needs.

A compact car suits two people with light luggage, town parking and surfaced roads. For a family, boot space can matter more than extra passenger space. Choose an automatic for driver comfort, not because it sounds more “holiday-proof”.

Do not choose a vehicle by assuming that every scenic route is a normal car route. Cyprus Tourism notes that minor and forest roads may be unsurfaced. The decisive source is the rental agreement: it should say what roads are permitted, whether a particular vehicle type is required and what cover applies. Compare the complete quote, not the daily rate

Compare the final booking screen for the same collection time, return time, vehicle class and named drivers. A later flight, extra driver or child seat can change the picture more than a small difference in the advertised daily price.

Cyprus Tourism says rates vary by vehicle category, season and extras. Read the terms rather than assuming one company includes what another does. Get any important protection, deposit or late-return term confirmed in writing.

Which airport collection makes sense?

Both Larnaca and Paphos airports have hire-car desks or pre-arranged collections. The best collection point is usually the airport you actually land at, provided the car improves the rest of the journey.

Collect at Paphos Airport when your holiday is based in the west and includes villages, the Akamas approach, Polis or days that are easier under your own timetable. Collect at Larnaca Airport when you are heading to Larnaca, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras or on a longer road trip. A cross-island collection can be a good choice for an itinerary that needs a car anyway. Avoid building a tight collection into the first hour after landing. If possible, make the first drive a simple route to the accommodation.

The collection checklist that prevents avoidable arguments

Slow down at the desk. It is the moment when a generic booking becomes a specific vehicle with a specific contract.

1. Check that the primary driver’s name, licence and booking dates match exactly.
2. Ask for the excess, deposit method and any exclusions in plain language; do not rely on a label such as “full cover”.
3. Photograph every panel, wheel, windscreen and the fuel gauge before leaving. Make sure existing marks are recorded.
4. Confirm the fuel level and return requirement, then keep the collection paperwork and any refuelling receipt.
5. Ask where you may drive, what to do after a puncture or collision, and which number to call for breakdown help.
6. Test the lights, air conditioning and any child seat while you are still at the collection point.
7. Save the accommodation address offline before setting off and set navigation while parked.

The official Cyprus tourism transport guidance says traffic drives on the left and signs and limits use kilometres. Its practical information also notes that rental insurance is valid only in the area under the control of the Republic of Cyprus. Licence, driving and safety: keep the sources current

For UK holidaymakers, current GOV.UK Cyprus travel advice says a UK photocard driving licence can be used in Cyprus. Paper-licence holders should check whether they need a photocard replacement or the relevant International Driving Permit. A rental company can have additional document rules, so check before travelling.

Cyprus drives on the left, but speed limits are metric. Give the driver time to settle at the first roundabout, pull-out and petrol stop. Seat belts, child restraints and phone use are legal and safety matters, not optional extras; the official guidance and your rental agreement are better sources than a social post. If you are tired after a flight, choose a transfer for that day or keep the first drive short.

The Green Line and northern Cyprus: do not leave it to the desk queue

Hiring in the Republic of Cyprus does not automatically mean the car is covered in the north. GOV.UK says cars hired in the Republic often have no insurance cover there, and that correct insurance documents are required at crossings. It may be possible to buy insurance at some crossings, but that does not establish the rental company’s permission or guarantee roadside assistance.

If the itinerary could include the north, ask before booking:

• Is cross-line travel permitted for this vehicle and this booking?
• Which insurance documents are required, and where do they apply?
• Does roadside assistance continue there?
• Are there routes or vehicle types the agreement excludes?
• What should happen if the plan changes while you are away?

Get the answer in writing. If the terms are vague, choose a plan that stays within the confirmed cover rather than trying to resolve it at a crossing point.

Return the car as carefully as you collected it

Allow time to find the airport return area, refuel if the agreement requires it and photograph the car and fuel gauge again. An early flight, unfamiliar access road or full forecourt is precisely when a narrow timetable causes stress. Keep the final receipt and ask how any later charge will be explained.
