Lofou is a small, almost entirely stone-built village 780 metres up in the Limassol wine country, 26 km from Limassol town and about 40 minutes away by car. Come for cobbled lanes, restored houses with tiled roofs, a 19th-century church, an 1842 fountain at the end of a short trail and a slow taverna lunch. For 2026-27 it is also, for the first time, one of the official Cyprus Christmas Villages, open from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

The name comes from lofos, Greek for hill, and the village is exactly that: houses stacked up the slope of a hilltop in the Krasochoria, the wine villages of Limassol. It is quieter and smaller than Omodos, half an hour to the west, and that is most of its appeal.

What to see in Lofou

Lofou is not a list of attractions; it is a village to walk around. Leave the car at the edge, because the lanes are steep, narrow and cobbled, and give yourself an hour to wander up through the restored houses with their wooden doors and balconies. Most of them have been brought back to their original form, which is why the village photographs so well from the road below at golden hour.

The Church of the Annunciation. The village church, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (Panagia Chrysolofitissa), dates from the 19th century and sits on a small rise on the west side of the village. According to Allaboutlimassol, its wall paintings were done by Othon Giavopoulos between 1910 and 1919.

The chapel of Prophet Elias. A short way out of the village is the small chapel of Profitis Elias. Visit Cyprus notes that its icon is believed locally to protect the grain from damaging rain. The area around it is the village’s picnic ground, used for the traditional Green Monday gathering at the start of Lent.

The museum and old school. Visit Cyprus lists a small agricultural museum and the old school among the sights; Allaboutlimassol describes the museum as a church-owned olive mill with its stone mill and press. Neither publishes opening hours, so treat them as a bonus if they are open rather than a reason to come.

History you cannot see. Archaeologists have excavated a Bronze Age cemetery at Lofou-Koulauzou, showing the hillside was lived on in the early to middle Bronze Age, long before the medieval village. The finds were published in academic papers rather than displayed on site, so there is nothing to visit. The village itself, Visit Cyprus says, has kept its name since Byzantine times.

The Elitzi fountain walk

The best short walk in Lofou goes to the Elitzi fountain (Vrysi tis Elitzis), the stone water fountain that Visit Cyprus dates to 1842. Villagers collected their water there until the 1950s. Allaboutlimassol puts the fountain about 1 km north-east of the village and the trail at about 1.5 km, starting a few dozen metres outside Lofou on the dirt road towards Silikou and dropping down to the fountain.

It is not one of the Forestry Department’s numbered nature trails, so there are no official timings or grading. Allow an hour there and back at an easy pace, wear proper shoes for the loose surface, take water in the warmer months, and remember that the return is uphill. Longer user-recorded loops from the village, of around 4 to 6 km, are on Wikiloc and Komoot if you want more. Our hiking in Cyprus guide covers the official mountain trails nearby.

Lofou Christmas Village 2026

This is the news for this winter. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s Christmas Villages programme in 2025-26 had eight villages: Agros, Deryneia, Fikardou, Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis, Kyperounta, Lefkara and Statos-Agios Fotios. For 2026-27 it lists nine, and the new one is Lofou. Visit Cyprus added its Lofou page in September 2026.

All nine villages run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The official programme promises cultural events, stalls of local products and handicrafts, food and craft workshops, guided village walks and nature activities, with local restaurants serving holiday menus. Last season the villages opened at weekends and on public holidays from late November, then every day from 22 December to 6 January; My Cyprus Life reports the same pattern for 2026-27, daily from 21 December. Lofou’s own programme had not been published on Visit Cyprus on 2 November 2026, so check the official Christmas Villages page before you drive up.

Two practical points. The sun sets in Lofou at about 16:39 in late November and 16:40 at the winter solstice, so arrive in daylight if you want to see the village and stay on for the lights. And at 780 m it is noticeably colder than the coast after dark, so bring a proper layer. For the wider festive picture, read our Cyprus at Christmas guide and Cyprus in December.

Where to eat and stay

The Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s gastronomy directory lists two tavernas in Lofou: Lofou Tavern and Kamares Tavern. Both are traditional village places, so order mezze and take your time. In winter, opening days can be irregular, so phone ahead rather than drive up on spec.

For an overnight stay, Visit Cyprus lists Agrovino Lofou traditional-house studios on Tsindouri Street, licensed as traditional houses. Staying in the village is the way to see it once the day visitors have gone, and it makes a good base for the Krasochoria and for Platres, about 25 minutes up the hill.

How to get to Lofou

By car. Visit Cyprus gives two routes: the B8 north from Limassol and then the F617, or the E601 and then the F617. The last stretch is a winding village road. Drive times below come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, so treat them as a guide and add time on mountain bends.

Parking is at the edge of the village; do not try to drive into the old lanes. Our driving in Cyprus guide and Cyprus car hire guide cover the rest.

By bus. In practice, you cannot. Lofou does not appear on any route on the EMEL network list on 2 November 2026. The nearest wine-village service is route 40 from Limassol to Omodos via Agios Amvrosios and Pachna, which does not stop in Lofou.

By taxi or tour. A taxi from Limassol is the simplest option if nobody wants to drive after a tasting; our Cyprus taxi guide explains the official tariff. Some organised Krasochoria tours from Limassol include Lofou alongside Omodos and a winery; check the itinerary before booking.

Lofou or Omodos?

Both are on the Visit Cyprus Krasochoria of Lemesos wine route, which links 20 villages and 16 wineries between Limassol and Platres. They suit different days.

The simple answer: go to Omodos first if you only have time for one, and add Lofou if you want somewhere quieter for lunch or sunset. They are 26 minutes apart. Our best villages in Cyprus guide compares the other well-known villages, and the Cyprus wine tours guide covers the wineries on the route.

When to go

Lofou works all year. Late September is harvest time, and Visit Cyprus says the village holds a Grape Fest at the end of the month where locals make traditional grape-juice sweets and offer tastings, with folk entertainment and wine. The mid-August festival for the Dormition of the Virgin is the busiest time of the summer. Spring brings almond blossom and green vineyards, and from late November to early January the Christmas Village gives a reason to visit on a winter weekend.

In high summer go late in the afternoon: the village is cooler than the coast but the lanes are steep, and the light is best as the sun drops behind the hills. For the mountains beyond, see our Troodos guide, and for the rest of the district, things to do in Limassol.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Where is Lofou in Cyprus?

In the Limassol district, in the Krasochoria wine villages on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountains. Visit Cyprus puts it at 780 metres and 26 km from Limassol town. By road it is about 28 km and 40 minutes from Limassol old port, 17 km from Omodos, 14 km from Platres and 68 km, about an hour and a quarter, from Paphos harbour.

Is Lofou worth visiting?

Yes, if you like quiet villages more than busy ones. Lofou is small, hilly and almost entirely stone-built, with cobbled lanes, a 19th-century church, an 1842 fountain reached by a short trail and two traditional tavernas. It is a half day rather than a full one, so pair it with Omodos, Vouni or a winery. If you want shops and a big square, Omodos suits you better.

Does Lofou have a Christmas Village?

Yes, for the first time in 2026. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism's 2025-26 programme had eight villages; the 2026-27 programme adds Lofou as the ninth. All nine run from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Last season the villages opened at weekends and on public holidays, then daily over Christmas and New Year. Lofou's own programme had not been published on 2 November 2026.

Can you get to Lofou by bus?

Not in any practical way. We could not find Lofou on any EMEL route in the Limassol bus network on 2 November 2026; the nearest wine-village service is route 40 to Omodos. Plan on a hire car, a taxi or an organised wine-village tour from Limassol.

Where can you eat in Lofou?

The Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Tourism lists two tavernas in the village, Lofou Tavern and Kamares Tavern. Both are traditional village tavernas, so expect mezze and grilled meat. Opening days vary out of season, so phone ahead in winter.
