Kantara Castle is a Byzantine and Lusignan fortress on a crag at the eastern end of the Kyrenia mountains in northern Cyprus, about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Ayia Napa via the Deryneia crossing. It opens Monday to Friday only, from 10:00 to 15:30 (last entry 14:45), and is closed at weekends and on public holidays. A full ticket costs 100 Turkish lira in 2026, about £1.55.
That weekday rule is the detail most visitors miss. It sits on the official timetable of the Turkish Cypriot Department of Antiquities and Museums, but none of the top search results mention it, and Tripadvisor still quotes last year’s 50 TL fee. Kantara is the easternmost and least visited of the three Kyrenia range castles, after St Hilarion and Buffavento, and it guards the road into the Karpas peninsula. This guide covers the hours and prices, the drive from the south and the north coast, what you will find inside and how to fit it into a day.

Opening hours and tickets in 2026
The department publishes one timetable for all its sites, split into a summer season (1 April to 31 October 2026) and a winter season. Most castles and museums change hours between the two. Kantara does not: its hours were 10:00 to 15:30 in summer 2025, winter 2025 to 2026 and summer 2026, according to the current page and Internet Archive copies of it. The one small change is that last entry moved from 15:00 to 14:45 this year.
Prices did change. Kantara cost 50 TL (20 TL for students) through the winter of 2025 to 2026 and doubled to 100 TL (50 TL) when the summer timetable started on 1 April 2026. At the 15 October 2026 rate that is about £1.53 or €1.81. Carry some Turkish lira: we could not confirm whether the ticket desk takes cards or euros.
| Kyrenia range castle | Hours, summer 2026 | Last entry | Full ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kantara Castle | 10:00 to 15:30, weekdays only | 14:45 | 100 TL |
| St Hilarion Castle | 09:00 to 18:30, daily | 17:30 | 150 TL |
| Buffavento Castle | Not on the department’s timetable |
Buffavento is not on the department’s timetable, so there are no official hours or ticket price to quote for it.
Which public holidays close it?
The north follows the Turkish Cypriot holiday calendar, not the Republic’s, and the two can fall on neighbouring days. On Wednesday 28 October 2026 the south marks Ochi Day, but Kantara is open as normal. The next day, Thursday 29 October, is Turkish Republic Day, a public holiday in the north, so on the department’s rule the castle is closed. A third-party holiday calendar lists the other dates for the year ahead: TRNC Republic Day on 15 November (a Sunday this year), New Year’s Day, Ramazan Bayramı from 9 to 11 March 2027 and Kurban Bayramı from 16 to 19 May 2027. Check close to the date, because religious holidays move each year.
How to get to Kantara Castle
You need a car or a tour: we found no public bus to the castle. The final road climbs through pine forest to a small car park just below the walls. Drive times below come from OSRM routing to the castle and exclude any wait at the checkpoint. From the east coast we routed through the Deryneia crossing, which takes cars and pedestrians.
| From | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Famagusta walled city | 42 km | 58 min |
| Ayia Napa, via Deryneia | 60 km | 1 hr 22 min |
| Protaras (Fig Tree Bay), via Deryneia | 61 km | 1 hr 22 min |
| Kyrenia harbour | 69 km | 1 hr 15 min |
| Golden Beach, Karpas | 77 km | 2 hr 2 min |
| Nicosia, Ledra Palace crossing | 85 km | 1 hr 39 min |
| Larnaca Airport | 94 km | 1 hr 47 min |
Two things matter more than the distances. First, the 14:45 last entry means that from Ayia Napa or Protaras you should be through the checkpoint by about midday, and earlier if you want time on top. Second, a car hired in the Republic is often not insured in the north. The UK Foreign Office warns about this, and our guide to crossing the Green Line explains what to ask the rental company before you go.
What to see at Kantara Castle
Kantara is a ruin, but a well-defined one, and the layout is easy to follow on the way up. Cliffs protect three sides, so the only approach is from the east, through a narrow valley guarded by two towers. From there the route runs:
- The barbican and main gate. A vaulted outer gate leads to a steep zigzag and the main gate, which once had a portcullis. Wikipedia, citing a 2014 study by the castle historian Nicolas Morelle, notes the barbican’s similarity to Armenian castle design in Cilicia, on the mainland opposite.
- The horseshoe tower. This rounded tower north of the gate supported the defenders of the barbican. It was built between 1208 and 1228 and its foundations were shored up in 1939 to stop it collapsing.
- Barracks and cisterns. Inside the walls, an enclosure of about 120 by 70 metres, are vaulted rooms with arrow slits, a latrine and the remains of the cisterns that stored rainwater, because the rock has no spring. The department notes that one vaulted room on the lower floor served as a prison.
- The summit and the Queen’s Window. At the top stand the remains of a tower and a room known as the Queen’s Chamber, with a Gothic window at the highest point of the castle. On a clear day you can see along the Karpas and across the Mesaoria plain.
Local legend says a ghostly queen sits by that window, looking out over her lost kingdom, which is where the “Kantara castle ghost” searches come from. It is a story rather than history, but it explains the name of the room.
A short history
Nobody knows exactly when Kantara was built. The most likely theories put it in the Byzantine period, either after the Arabs were driven out in 965 or in the 1090s, when the empire was strengthening its defences against raids from the coast of Asia Minor. The antiquities department says it began as a watchtower in the 10th century.
Its first certain mention is in 1191, when Richard the Lionheart took Cyprus from Isaac Komnenos. Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar, which is why the castle turns up in searches about Templar castles, but their rule lasted barely a year before Guy de Lusignan bought it. During the war between the Ibelins and the supporters of Emperor Frederick II, the castle was besieged in 1229 and its garrison surrendered the following year.
The best story comes from 1373. When the Genoese seized Famagusta, Prince John of Antioch escaped disguised as his cook’s servant and held out at Kantara, from where he helped drive the Genoese back. James I then rebuilt the castle as a garrison fort, and most of what stands today is his work. The Venetians judged it obsolete, the last garrison left in 1525 and the castle was dismantled in 1560.
Combining Kantara with the Karpas or Famagusta
Kantara’s hours make it the first stop of a day, not the last. Opening at 10:00 and closing to new visitors at 14:45, it fits on the way out to the Karpas and rarely on the way back. A realistic weekday plan from Ayia Napa or Protaras is:
- Cross at Deryneia around 08:45 and reach Kantara for 10:00.
- Spend an hour at the castle, then drive on to Golden Beach, about two hours further along slow peninsula roads.
- Return in daylight, which means leaving the tip of the peninsula by mid-afternoon in winter.
If that is too much driving, pair Kantara with Famagusta and Salamis instead, which are under an hour away. From Kyrenia it makes a long but straightforward day along the north coast road. For more on the differences between the two sides of the island, see north or south Cyprus.
Is Kantara Castle worth visiting?
Yes, if you can go on a weekday. It costs very little, it is quieter than St Hilarion and the views from the top are among the widest on the island. It suits people already heading for the Karpas or staying in Famagusta, Protaras or Ayia Napa. It suits Paphos or Limassol visitors least, because it is at least three hours away, and anyone free only at weekends, when the gate is shut.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Is Kantara Castle open at weekends?
No. The Turkish Cypriot Department of Antiquities and Museums lists Kantara as closed at weekends and on public holidays, all year. It opens Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:30, with last entry at 14:45. Plan a weekday visit, and check the north's holiday calendar, which differs from the Republic's.
How much does it cost to visit Kantara Castle?
A full ticket costs 100 Turkish lira and a student ticket 50 lira in 2026, about 1.55 pounds or 1.80 euros at the 15 October 2026 exchange rate. The price doubled from 50 lira in April 2026, so older reviews quoting 50 lira are out of date.
How long does it take to drive to Kantara Castle from Ayia Napa?
About 60 km and one hour 20 minutes through the Deryneia crossing, before any queue at the checkpoint. From Protaras it is much the same, from Famagusta about an hour, and from Kyrenia about an hour and a quarter along the north coast.
Who built Kantara Castle?
Nobody knows exactly. It was most likely founded by the Byzantines, perhaps in the 10th or late 11th century, as a lookout against raids. Most of what you see today dates from the Lusignan kings, especially James I, who rebuilt and enlarged it in the late 14th century.
Is Kantara Castle hard to climb?
It is a smaller site than St Hilarion. From the car park a path and steps lead up through the gatehouse to the summit tower; allow about an hour. Wear shoes with grip, as the rock and steps can be uneven and slippery, and it is not suitable for wheelchairs.
