St Hilarion Castle is a Byzantine and Lusignan fortress on a limestone peak in the Kyrenia mountains of northern Cyprus, about 20 minutes’ drive from Kyrenia harbour. Until 31 October 2026 it opens daily from 09:00 to 18:30 (last entry 17:30), and a full ticket costs 150 Turkish lira, about £2.30. Allow at least 90 minutes: the castle climbs through three wards to a summit at around 732 metres.
It is the best preserved of the three castles along the Kyrenia range, with Buffavento and Kantara, and the view from its upper ward takes in the whole north coast. It is also in the north, under Turkish Cypriot administration, so getting there from Paphos, Limassol or Ayia Napa means crossing the Green Line. This guide covers the official hours and prices, the drive up, what you will find on each level and the stories attached to the place.

Tickets and opening hours in 2026
The figures come from the visiting-hours page of the Turkish Cypriot Department of Antiquities and Museums, which runs the site. The full ticket is 150 lira and the student ticket 50 lira, the same as Bellapais Abbey and Kyrenia Castle. At the European Central Bank reference rate on 7 October 2026, 150 lira is about £2.30 or €2.70. Our guide to money in Cyprus explains why the north uses a different currency from the south.
St Hilarion keeps shorter hours than its neighbours. It opens an hour later than Bellapais and Kyrenia Castle and stops admitting visitors half an hour earlier, so if you are planning a full day in the Kyrenia area, put the castle in the middle of it rather than at the end.
| Site (summer 2026) | Hours | Last entry | Full ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Hilarion Castle | 09:00 to 18:30, daily | 17:30 | 150 TL |
| Bellapais Abbey | 08:00 to 19:00, daily | 18:00 | 150 TL |
| Kyrenia Castle | 08:00 to 19:00, daily | 18:00 | 150 TL |
| Kantara Castle | 10:00 to 15:30, weekdays only | 14:45 | 100 TL |
| Salamis | 08:00 to 19:00, daily | 18:00 | 150 TL |
The Kantara line is worth noticing if you are collecting the three mountain castles: the department lists it as closed at weekends and on public holidays.
Two dates matter for an October visit:
- The summer schedule ends on 31 October. The winter 2026 to 2027 hours and price had not been posted when we checked, so confirm them on the official page before a November trip.
- The clocks go back on 25 October. By our calculation sunset at the castle falls at 18:22 on 7 October, 18:00 on 24 October and 16:59 on 25 October. In the last week of the summer schedule, someone entering at 17:30 would be climbing in the dark. Arrive by mid-afternoon; our Cyprus time zone guide has the full clock-change details.
What to see: the three wards
The castle is built on three levels, each designed to hold out on its own. The department’s site description and Wikipedia’s Saint Hilarion Castle article agree on the layout.
The lower ward. You enter through the outer walls, which the Byzantines strengthened in the 11th century. This level held the garrison’s quarters and the stables. Stand back and look up: Prince John’s Tower sits on a cliff high above the lower castle.
The middle ward. A steeper path leads to the economic heart of the castle, with a church, a large cistern, a kitchen and halls. This is where most people pause for breath and the first wide view over Kyrenia and the coast.
The upper ward. You pass through a pointed Lusignan gateway into a courtyard between two rocky peaks. To the west are the royal apartments, about 25 m long and 6 m wide, with a cistern below and two floors above. The upper floor holds the Queen’s Window, a carved Gothic window that looks west over the plain of Lapta (Lapithos) and the north coast. The department says you can see Turkey on a clear day.
The final steps. The highest point, at around 732 m, is reached by a steep stairway with a handrail. AllTrails users log the walk around the castle at about a mile with roughly 100 m of climbing, which sounds modest until you are on uneven stone steps in the sun. Wear proper shoes, carry water and do not attempt it with a pushchair. There is very little shade above the lower ward.
A short history
The castle is named after a hermit, though not the famous one. Both the department and Wikipedia say it does not take its name from Saint Hilarion of Gaza, the 4th-century monk, but from an obscure holy man who fled to Cyprus after the Arab conquest of the Holy Land and lived out his life on this peak. That answers one of the most common questions people search about the place.
The Byzantines fortified the site from the 11th century, and with Buffavento and Kantara it formed a chain of lookouts against raids on the coast. The department says the castle’s first appearance in written records is in 1191, the year Richard the Lionheart took Cyprus. Under the Lusignan kings it became a royal retreat, and in the 1220s and 1230s it was fought over during the war between Emperor Frederick II and John of Ibelin for control of the island. In the 15th century the Venetians dismantled much of it to save the cost of keeping a garrison.
Its strategic value lasted into modern times. During the intercommunal fighting of 1964, Turkish Cypriot fighters held the castle and the pass road below it, and the ridge around it remains a military area today, which is why the approach road passes an army zone.
The Disney story
Almost every tour listing repeats that St Hilarion inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, and the antiquities department’s own page says so. We could find no Disney source for it. Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle is usually traced to Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. Treat it as a local legend; the castle looks the part either way.
Getting there
St Hilarion sits just west of the main highway between Nicosia and Kyrenia. A signed turn-off on the mountain section of the highway leads to a narrow road of about 4 km that climbs to the car park beneath the lower ward. The last stretch passes a military area: keep moving, do not stop, and follow the UK Foreign Office advice to avoid taking photographs near military sites.
These times come from the OSRM routing engine and run to the castle turn-off on the highway. Add about 4 km and 10 minutes for the castle road. They do not include time at a checkpoint.
| Starting point | Distance to turn-off | Drive time (no queue) |
|---|---|---|
| Kyrenia harbour | 9.6 km | 15 min |
| Bellapais Abbey | 11.4 km | 20 min |
| Ayios Dometios crossing, Nicosia | 17.8 km | 20 min |
| Larnaca Airport | 72.5 km | 1 hr 9 min |
| Ayia Napa | 89.7 km | 1 hr 26 min |
| Limassol | 103.2 km | 1 hr 35 min |
| Paphos Airport | 162.4 km | 2 hr 23 min |
From the south, the vehicle crossing at Ayios Dometios in west Nicosia is the obvious one, because it puts you almost straight onto the Kyrenia highway. Our Green Line crossing guide covers documents, which crossings take cars and what you can bring back.
By hire car. The UK Foreign Office warns that cars hired in the Republic often have no insurance cover in the north. Check that your rental contract allows the trip before buying insurance at the crossing; our car hire guide explains what to look for.
On a tour. Day tours from the south often pair St Hilarion with Kyrenia harbour and Bellapais Abbey and handle the crossing for you. From Paphos or Limassol that is the least tiring option.
Your phone. North of the line your handset may join a Turkish network, where EU roaming caps do not apply. Our phone guide explains how to avoid a surprise bill.
Combining it with Kyrenia and Bellapais
St Hilarion, Bellapais and Kyrenia harbour sit within 20 minutes of each other, which makes them an easy day. Because St Hilarion opens latest, a sensible order is Bellapais at 08:00 while it is cool and quiet, St Hilarion mid-morning, then lunch and Kyrenia Castle in town in the afternoon. Reverse it and you risk reaching the castle after last entry.
If you have enjoyed the Crusader period, the south has its own: Kolossi Castle near Limassol is a Knights Hospitaller tower built while the same Lusignan dynasty ruled the island. And if you are still deciding whether to base yourself north or south for a trip, our north or south Cyprus guide sets out the trade-offs.
Is it worth it?
For most visitors, yes. It costs less than a coffee, the climb is short, and the view from the Queen’s Window is one of the best on the island. The people it suits least are anyone with limited mobility, because almost everything above the car park is reached by steps, and anyone coming from Paphos for a single site. For walkers who want more of the range, our hiking guide covers trails across the island.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to visit St Hilarion Castle?
A full ticket costs 150 Turkish lira and a student ticket 50 lira in the 2026 summer season, according to the Turkish Cypriot Department of Antiquities and Museums. That is about 2.30 pounds or 2.70 euros at the 7 October 2026 exchange rate. Bellapais Abbey and Kyrenia Castle cost the same.
What are St Hilarion Castle's opening hours?
From 1 April to 31 October 2026 the castle opens daily from 09:00 to 18:30, with last entry at 17:30. That is an hour later and half an hour earlier than Bellapais Abbey and Kyrenia Castle. The winter 2026 to 2027 hours had not been published when we checked on 7 October 2026.
Is St Hilarion Castle hard to climb?
It is a steady climb rather than a hike. The path rises through three levels to the upper ward at about 732 metres, with steep stone steps near the top and a handrail on the steepest sections. Allow 90 minutes to two hours, wear shoes with grip and take water, because there is little shade. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs beyond the lower ward.
Did St Hilarion Castle inspire Disney's Sleeping Beauty?
Probably not. The story is repeated widely, including by the Turkish Cypriot antiquities department, but we found no Disney source for it. Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle is usually traced to Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. St Hilarion's fairytale look is real enough without the legend.
Can you visit St Hilarion Castle from the south of Cyprus?
Yes. Cross the Green Line in Nicosia and it is about 20 minutes to the castle turn-off on the Nicosia to Kyrenia highway, then about 4 km up the castle road. From Larnaca Airport allow around an hour and a half each way plus the checkpoint queue. From Paphos it is a long day, so most people take a tour.
